Demolition Day #2

Today was shorter but harder since we were all little tired and a little sore from yesterday. Also, today it seemed we did the same motions over and over again without much variety, so our muscles complained a little earlier and a little louder than yesterday.

The morning started with a plumbing problem - more junk disturbed from the plumbing lines have now clogged the upstairs toilet line and the shut off for the toilet. THe main shut off for the house also leaks badly and needs to be replaced.  Good news is that we can wait until Tuesday (and avoid expensive weekend fees); bad news is that we are down to one toilet from our normal three!

Not long after the plumbing crisis was resolved, Murray arrived and the serious demolition could resume. We could not have done the demo without Adam and Murray! Thank you!!!!

Wendy began working on removing the panelling from the back stairwell.

Adam and Murray using flat shovels and crow bars to remove the linoleum and subfloor all at once.

Murray set our circular saw to "not very deep" (that's as technical as I got)
and cut the drywall section our contractors need for access to the wall interior.

Pretty dusty work but it didn't take long.

After the dust settled, Wendy began the slow plodding work of removing the remaining screws and hundreds of staples left over from the subfloor. Bit hard on the back and arm muscles. Wendy couldn't sit on the floor because of so many protuding items - OUCH!

Parker used the shop vac to get rid of small debris so
Wendy could actually see the staples and screws!

Murray and Adam now removing the dining room hardwood.

Eric had signed the planking back in 1999 when he, with his little helper Adam (Age 2 1/2), was installing those end shelves we just removed. Wendy had forgotten this was done so was happy to find it again. We will get Parker to sign somewhere on the planking this year.

Parker begrudingly pitched in but ended up doing a fair bit of work too. Here he is picking up the paper on which the hardwood was laid over the planking.

After the hardwood was removed it left behind probably 1000 small flat "nails" shaped
like a number 1. We tried pulling them out but it was just easier to simply flatten them to the planking. We are hoping that it is OK to re-apply hardwood over top.
Here Parker is pounding them flat.

Adam and Murray now removing the hardwood from the living room.
All that dust is because Murray used the circular saw to chop down the length of the hardwood to a  more mangeable size.

This was our routine for over an hour. Murray and Adam pulled up the wood.
Wendy picked it up, walked it out the front door and shot it out onto the driveway.
Eric  picked it up again and placed it in the bin.

Eric had to put the hardwood in the bin more carefully since it was now so full!

This is the living room with no hardwood, but with the paper and flat nails all still in place.

This is the kitchen and dining room.
No subfloor, no linoleum, no hardwood, no screws, and no staples!
A nice clean slate to start anew.

Doing the demo ourselves was hard work but saved us thousands of dollars!
Thank you Adam, Murray, Mike and Parker!!!
